STMicroelectronics (ST) was established in 1987 as a new enterprise after the merger of Italy's SGS Semiconductor and France's Thomson Semiconductor. Since its establishment, ST's growth rate has exceeded the overall growth rate of the semiconductor industry. ST has been one of the top ten semiconductor companies in the world since 1999.
The entire group has nearly 50,000 employees, 16 advanced R&D facilities, 39 design and application centers, 15 major manufacturing plants, and 78 sales offices in 36 countries.
The company is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and is also the headquarters for Europe and emerging markets; the company's US headquarters is in Carrollton, Texas; its Asia Pacific headquarters is in Singapore; its Japanese operations are based in Tokyo ; Greater China is headquartered in Shanghai, responsible for the business in Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan.
